Brown spots, often called sun spots or age spots, are flat or slightly raised areas of extra pigment that appear after years of sun exposure, most often on the face, hands, chest and arms. Benign brown spots are cosmetic, but every pigmented spot must be assessed first.
After a careful assessment, suitable superficial brown spots are treated precisely with a fine thermocoagulation probe, spot by spot. Anything that is changing, irregular, multi-coloured or unusual is not treated and is referred to a physician or dermatologist.

Treated spots darken slightly and form a fine crust that flakes away over one to two weeks, revealing lighter skin underneath. Daily sunscreen is essential to protect results.
Moles, cysts and suspicious lesions are outside esthetic practice, medical esthetics included. Any spot that is changing, irregular or unusual is referred to a physician or dermatologist before any cosmetic treatment. Where there is any uncertainty, Liza will not treat without written confirmation from your physician that the lesion is benign and suitable.
Liza earned her esthetics college diploma and licence in 2000, while BC’s former Cosmetologists Act was in force; BBB has verified her diploma. Since 2003, no licence has been required to practise esthetics in BC, and “medical esthetician” (or “medical aesthetician”) is not a regulated title. BC regulates the premises instead: Cantik’s studio is inspected every year by Fraser Health.
Diagnosing skin conditions and removing moles or cysts are outside esthetic practice, medical esthetics included. These are referred to a physician or dermatologist.
Liza uses the Silhouet-Tone VascuLyse 2G®, a Health Canada-licensed device. You have the right to ask what device will be used on your skin and whether it is licensed by Health Canada.
Who will perform my treatment? What training do they hold? Is the device licensed by Health Canada? Will you refer anything outside your scope?
No. Each spot is assessed first. Moles and any spot that is changing, irregular, bleeding or unusual are outside esthetic practice and are referred to a physician or dermatologist.
Many superficial brown spots improve after one session. Some need a second session about 4 to 6 weeks later.
A treated spot usually stays lighter, but new spots can form with sun exposure. Daily SPF is the best protection.
